Stop soil erosion by conversion of crop cultivation

Welimada area in the Badulla district is one of the main vegetable cultivation area in the central highland of Sri Lanka and farming is the main livelihood of the majority of the people.  
However, due to geographical factors as well as unsustainable farming practices soil erosion is a serious issue in the area that makes farming less profitable and attractive. Uvaparanagama DS division in Welimada has been identified as the area with highest soil erosion in Sri Lanka by studies. 
The other factors caused for soil erosion are lack of awareness of the farmers on soil erosion, its consequences and conservation technologies and cultivation of unsuitable crops for the terrain.

Women in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka practice sustainable land management through vanilla cultivation and earn extra income for their families.The average land size of home gardens in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka is about 0.25 ac – 0.5 acre. Fruits and spice trees randomly exist in these land plots. The topsoil is always disturbed due to daily human activities. Apart from run-off water from upper lands, rooftop rainwater flows in all directions causing heavy soil erosion in the home gardens.

Measures to stop soil pollution in Welimeda

Site specific fertilizer recommendations for farmlands after soil testing is now being implemented in Welimada area by the Degraded Agricultural Land Rehabilitation Project (RDALP) of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations. The Badulla district field coordinator of the RDALP Upul Jayaweera said that soil testing has already been completed around 90% of the farmlands in the selected project implementing micro watershed  areas of the district.

Crop-livestock integration improves nutrient cycling and soil productivity: solid and liquid organic fertilizers prepared from cow manure are incorporated into soil or the leaves of vegetables and tea.
Dairy cattle farming is common in the Dolluwa area of the central province of Sri Lanka. Farmers typically have 3-4 cows on about 2-3 hectares for both milk consumption and sales.
